Wines of the World- Everything You Need to Know About Pinot Noir

Welcome to week two of our new column about wines from around the world. This week, we’re diving into Pinot Noir, a grape that produces some of the most profound wines globally, from Burgundy to California and New Zealand.

Pinot Noir inspires more passion in its fans than almost any other variety. Its history in Burgundy spans nearly a millennium, where its Grand Crus command top prices. It also excels in the New World, with notable wines from Oregon to New Zealand. Though challenging to grow, Pinot Noir thrives in the right soil and cooler climates, offering exceptional wines. It’s even a key component in Champagne!

What is Pinot Noir?

Pinot Noir is a red wine grape variety, also used to make rosé and one of the three main grapes in Champagne. Known for its versatility, it ranges from affordable, fruit-driven bottles to high-end collector’s items. The majority of Pinot Noir wines are red, but it can also produce fantastic rosé. A great example is the Inman Family “Endless Crush” OGV Estate Rosé.

Why should you drink Pinot Noir?

Pinot Noir varies by region and production style, from bright and fruit-forward to age-worthy classics. Depending on where it’s grown and how it’s produced, Pinot Noir can either be perfect for everyday sipping or capable of aging for decades. In general, good Pinot Noir costs a bit more than Cabernet Sauvignon or Syrah due to the challenges it poses in the vineyard. Its higher acidity and moderate tannins make it great for sipping alone or pairing with various foods. Whether enjoyed young or aged, Pinot Noir’s diverse styles and price points offer something for everyone.
