Start your adventure in Como the gateway to the lake. Then travel to the smaller towns that surround the lake. The city of Como is approximately 45 minutes by ferry to the beautiful lakeside town of Varenna.
Como City is steeped in history and is home to one of Italy’s most iconic 14th-century gothic and renaissance cathedrals, Santa Maria Assunta it’s absolutely magnificent and you can climb the cathedrals dome and enjoy panoramic views of the city. Explore the charming town’s historic centre and wander through the cobblestone streets.
If you’re looking to explore the lake my advice would be to stay in one of the many towns the lake has to offer. When I visited, I chose to stay in Varna. One of the reasons I was attracted to Varenna was because it was easy to get to Milan and also easy to get to the other towns on the lake by ferry. Bellagio, Menaggio, Lecco, and Leno to name but a few are all within easy reach.
Varenna is an old fishing village and has a charming old town, with beautiful views with botanical gardens and a medieval castle with incredible panoramic views. It is also one of the most beautiful and picturesque towns on Lake Como, the main reason I chose it as a base.
You can book your ferry tickets at the ferry station in Varenna and it takes only 15 minutes to get to Bellagio costing approximately €3.
Bellagio known as the “Pearl of the Lake” take a wander through the narrow alleys lined with small boutiques and cafes and most importantly enjoy a gelato from one of the many Gelaterias along the way.
If you’re only planning a short visit I’d recommend taking the ferry to the towns you want to see or you can book a private boat trip.
I highly recommend visiting one of the magnificent villas dotted around the lake, ie. the very famous 18 century Villa del Balbianello. It was featured in a number of famous movies including Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones and Casino Royale. The Villa is open to the public but you will need a ticket to visit, you can book these online in advance. You can take a shuttle boat from Lenno to Villa de Balbianello for approx €3 which takes 9 minutes.
