Established in 2005 with the acquisition of a former onsen facility, Glamping Villa Hanz began its journey with a vision to redefine luxury hospitality. Overcoming challenges such as the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy in 2008, the team pressed forward, envisioning a guest house-style Jjimjilbang, a traditional Korean bathhouse and a sauna-cantered resort inspired by the Therme Vals thermal baths in Switzerland. The dream expanded further to include the creation of a kiln-style sauna and cottage facility, makibi, celebrating the harmony of “Fire and Water” and the essence of “Return to Nature/Slowlife.”
In 2014, Glamping Villa Hanz took a significant step forward with the acquisition of three traditional Japanese houses, including the illustrious Ogasawara House and the revered Itakura Folk Museum. Each structure was meticulously restored, blending centuries-old craftsmanship with modern amenities. The Ogasawara House, dating back to the 1550s and rebuilt during the Tenpō Reforms in 1840, now stands as the Honkan, boasting a rare Kirizuma-zukuri style roof and a dynamic Fukinuke atrium, offering guests a glimpse into Japan’s feudal past. The word Honkan can be literally translated to “Main Buildling”. It is the first building that the guests see when entering the resort. It is also the building that has a wine cellar, Japanese style bath, bar, and the terrace to enjoy breakfast with the view of Mt. Fuji.
The architecture of the Honkan reflects the intricate craftsmanship of its time, boasting rare features like the dynamic Fukinuke atrium and the traditional Zashiki rooms adorned with Japanese calligraphy. The Ogasawara clan’s illustrious history, from their role as protectors of Shinano province to their revival during the Azuchi-Momoyama period, is woven into the very fabric of Glamping Villa Hanz.
Complementing the Honkan is the Guest House, housed within the Itakura Folk Museum, a symbol of Meiji-era architecture in Joetsu Niigata. Renowned for its Chumon-Zukuri style and Kayabuki-yane thatched roof, the Guest House offers guests a glimpse into rural Japanese life while providing modern amenities for a comfortable stay.
