Travel Industry’s Worst Fears Confirmed

Travel industry news

Holiday Plans Dashed as Minister for Health Simon Harris says it is “not looking good” for foreign travel this year.   The Ministers advice at the moment was not to leave the island of Ireland.  He said that ‘it was looking more and more unlikely that Irish Holidaymakers would be heading abroad for holidays this year’, confirming the worst fears of the Irish Travel Industry.

Minister Harris went on to state that people travelling into Ireland are now required to self-isolate for 14 days.  This is now the case in most EU countries.

Inbound travellers to Ireland are now asked to complete a Public Health Passenger Locator form which includes their contact details and where they will be in self-isolation.  The minister said that very few people were visiting Ireland currently but this may change in the coming months.

Austria is opening its hotels including swimming pools from May 29th and Portugal and Greece are also looking at at a gradual easing of lock-downs.  This statement today from Minister Harris will be a severe blow to many Irish Holidaymakers who were hoping to travel abroad from late July or early August.  It will also heighten the need for the EU to put a rescue package in place to bail out the ailing airline industry which may not survive these stringent restrictions.
