  • An Escorted Tour in China: Whether a Tiger or a Monkey Like Me

Chinese New Year celebrations begin and I am reminded of my once-in-a-lifetime adventure in China. I explored the sights of Beijing, Mutianyu, and Xi’an.  Five years on, the experiences that still resonate include Tiananmen Square, the birthplace of the Republic of China. Next to it lies the Forbidden City. This was the Imperial Palace, home to centuries of Emperors right up to the 20th century. Now the Palace Museum, visitors can enjoy the spectacular architecture, landscaped gardens and art throughout this palace complex. 2024 will see a century has passed since it was opened to the public. It is serene & spectacular in equal measure.  At the outskirts of Beijing lies Mutianyu, home to one of the best-preserved sections of the Great Wall of China. This extraordinary structure stretches across China’s vast landscape. You can walk a section or opt for a cable car. It’s worth noting the walk is steep slope but friendly locals selling beers along the route makes for a welcome distraction.  Xi’an My preference for something a little off the beaten track drew me to Xi’an. Xi’an formed the end of the “silk road”. With a guide, the escorted tour explored the remaining defence walls of the city. A cycling tour, along the top of these walls, enabled us to cover 13km of ancient architecture from towers, drawbridges and parapets. There is a wonderful freedom to pedalling through the city, witnessing life go by in another culture and was a highlight of the tour.   Terracotta Warriors Xi’an is also home to the Terracotta Warriors that will stop you in your tracks. Each of the full-sized 8,000+ hand-painted statues dating back to the 3rd century is unique. Laid out in a colossal museum, the collection includes various ranking soldiers, archers, acrobats and even musicians. There are even cavalry horses and horse-drawn chariots. The size of the collection, the detail, and their preservation are almost unbelievable. China was an extraordinary, once-in-a-lifetime trip. There is a significant advantage to having guides, as part of an escorted tour. They provide context to culturally significant sights, navigate logistics and converse with locals (English is not widely spoken). The food was fantastic though Irish palettes may not be accustomed to Chinese food morning, noon and night. The tip of packing a few plain crackers, just in case, proved very helpful to settle a stomach. Also, toilet facilities outside the comfort of your hotel room are rustic at best – be warned & enough said.  To all celebrating this Chinese New Year, I wish you great happiness & prosperity. To those born in the Year of the Monkey, it has served me well (now I’m showing my age). As for China, I would return in a heartbeat.

  • Five Underrated Countries for a Golf Trip in Europe

There are many well-known countries around Europe that are perfect for a golf trip away. The likes of Portugal, Spain and Ireland provide an amazing and consistent standard of golf course throughout, which is why they are the most popular choices. Sometimes it’s nice to try somewhere new though. That’s why I’ve decided to round up five of the most underrated golf destinations in Europe. Five Underrated Countries for a Golf Trip in Europe Belgium First on our list is beautiful Belgium. Belgium not only being one of the most scenic countries in Europe, surprisedly has almost 100 affiliated golf clubs according to the Royal Belgian Golf Federation . With the number of courses in Belgium, you are spoiled for choice. From some of the oldest golf courses in continental Europe to some stunning golf links across the Belgian coastline. Two stand-out courses in Belgium are the Royal Ostend Golf Club and the Royal Golf Club of Belgium . The Royal Ostend is the stand-out links course that is extremely well maintained and quite challenging while the Royal Golf Club of Belgium is the mecca of golf in Belgium. Bulgaria Don’t be shocked, that does actually read Bulgaria. Bulgaria wouldn’t be the first name to pop into most heads when thinking golf, but you’d be surprised at the potential this place has to be the next big thing! Bulgaria offers a cheap alternative to the heavyweights of the golf Europe scene, which is always an added bonus. However, having a cheap alternative doesn’t always mean giving up quality. There is plenty of quality around Bulgaria. Bulgaria offers two fabulous courses designed by the legendary Gary Player in the Black Sea Rama which is a test to any golfer with challenging features and Thracian Cliffs , which is has been quite frequently referred to as  ‘the world’s most dramatic golf course’ as it basically hangs over the stunning Bulgarian coastline. Sweden Sweden is a leading emerging nation on the European golf scene, now having over 300 golf courses to choose from. Golf in Sweden almost feels like it’s part of the scenery. Courses blend effortlessly with their surroundings and almost become one in the area. Sweden has some really stunning courses across its coastline with the likes of Falsterbo Golf Club, Vasatorps Golfklubb and S:t Arild Golfklubb . All three course provide their own unique look at the coast while having their own challenges and obstacles to overcome. Denmark Denmark, like Bulgaria, you would not expect to make a list like this, but yes golf has begun to become extremely popular in Denmark, therefore demanding better quality courses. The country now has over 180 courses to pick from with a variety of difficulty levels. Denmark would be considered another low-cost holiday for golfers as green fees are less than other golfing countries. Another pleasing factor in Denmark is it generally has a great golf climate and can be played all year round. Some of the courses worth playing when visiting are Great Northern , Mariagerfjord Golf Club and Ledreborg Palace Golf Club . Greece Last but certainly not least, Greece! When you think of Greece, you think of the stunning islands, the amazing views, the ocean, the beaches and the nightlife. Golf wouldn’t be one of the main things to pop into your head. The sport in Greece has only recently gained some popularity so there are only eight golf courses spread out across the country but, one of those golf courses is the incredible Dunes Course at Costa Navarino . The Dunes Course at Costa Navarino is one of the most underrated golf courses in the entirety of Europe. Therefore Greece had to make this list. The Dunes Course is the first signature-designed golf course in Greece. The impressive seaside Dunes Course was designed by two-time US Masters Champion and former Ryder Cup Captain Bernhard Langer in association with European Golf Design and a challenge to any golfer.

  • Celebrating Ulysse's Centenary in Paris

James Joyce’s celebrated  Ulysses  was first published as a complete novel on 2 February 1922 – in Paris. One hundred years later, Tourism Ireland plans to take every opportunity to shine a spotlight on ‘Ulysses 100’ in its promotional activity around the world this year. Yesterday, Tourism Ireland in France joined forces with the Centre Culturel Irlandais (Irish Cultural Centre) in Paris, to host an event for around 30 French cultural journalists, to celebrate the centenary. At the event, the journalists heard all about Joyce’s masterpiece and how 2022 marks 100 years since its publication in the French capital. The event provided an excellent opportunity to highlight Dublin and our rich literary heritage to the influential journalists – who, in turn, will encourage their readers to visit Dublin and Ireland. Tourism Ireland’s aim is to encourage potential visitors to come and follow in the footsteps of Leopold Bloom, to discover Dublin and some of the city’s cultural and architectural delights. Monica MacLaverty, Tourism Ireland’s Manager Southern Europe, said:  “Tourism Ireland was delighted to partner with the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris to host this event. It was a great opportunity to celebrate the centenary of Joyce’s Ulysses and to highlight Dublin and our literary heritage to the influential French cultural journalists in attendance. Tourism Ireland will continue to highlight Ulysses 100 here in France and in other key markets around the world – particularly to our important ‘culturally curious’ audience.”

The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef system composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching along a large portion of the coastline of Australia. In Australia, there are different tours and dives that help you explore the Great Barrier Reef up close and personal. Visit the Famous Australian Beaches One thing that always comes to mind when thinking of Australia is the beautiful beaches. When visiting you will be spoiled for choice with the vast selection Australia holds. From the more famous options like Bondi Beach in Sydney and Whitehaven Beach in Queensland to the more unknown ones like Bailey Beach in Perth or Kitty Miller Beach in Victoria . Get your surfboard out, ‘sunnies’ on and take in the sun at these amazing beaches. Appropriately named the ‘coathanger’ by locals, it’s a staple part of the city; you can walk or cycle across it and even climb to its peak for incredible views. With Bridge Climb Sydney , you have the opportunity to safely scale the Sydney Harbour Bridge. They offer a range of different experiences at different costs. Sandboarding in Sydney We all know you can catch some ‘gnarly’ waves on your surfboard at the amazing beach in Australia, but what about catching some waves on land. Stockton Dunes Sandboarding and Sand Surfing give visitors and locals this opportunity. Head out into their privately-owned dunes of Port Stephens with a friendly instructor who will teach you how to sandboard and sand surf. The difference being sandboarding is a seated approach while sandsurfing is standing. It is similar to skiing as there are difficult hills for experienced sandsurfers as well as hills for beginners.

  • 11 of Your Favourite Movie Destinations

The Hateful Eight – Colorado With diverse yet beautiful surroundings and vast open spaces, Colorado makes the perfect movie set. When filming one of his most famous films, The Hateful Eight director Quentin Tarantino thought so too. The snowy exteriors from the film were found on the Schmid Ranch , where the set was built. Ten miles from Telluride and in the San Miguel Mountains, Schmid Ranch has been in operation since 1882 and is available to rent for a remote, off-grid holiday. Fans of the destination can also celebrate their weddings at the historical location. Follow in the footsteps of the Batman in Pittsburgh Pittsburgh has provided a backdrop for many blockbuster movies over the years. The city played a starring role in coming-of-age drama The Perks of Being a Wallflower as well as action thrillers Jack Reacher and The Dark Knight Rises, all of which celebrate their 10-year anniversaries this year. Ahead of The Batman’s release in March this year, visitors can see some of The Dark Knight Rises’ most notable filming locations in Pittsburgh including the football stadium scene, filmed at Heinz Field, and the scene where Bane exposes the truth about Harvey Dent, filmed outside the Carnegie Mellon University portrayed as Gotham City Hall. Sleepless in Seattle  The Seattle skyline has been the star of many movies over the years such as The Ring and 10 Things I Hate About You, and even inspired classic romantic comedy Sleepless in Seattle . Starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, the 1993 film played homage to many iconic spots around the Emerald City. Visitors can retrace the footsteps of Sam Baldwin (played by Hanks) by visiting Pike Place Market , one of the oldest continuously operated farmers markets in the United States, see the floating home of Sam and his son on Lake Union, and stroll along hidden gem Alki Beach. Ladybird – Sacramento, California  Winner of two Golden Globes – Best Motion Picture and Best Performance by an Actress by Saoirse Ronan – plus five Oscar nominations and three Bafta nominations, Ladybird is “a love letter to Sacramento ” claims the film’s writer and director Greta Gerwig. Sacramento native Gerwig pays tribute to her hometown, California’s capital, in the coming-of-age story about a high school senior in 2002 (played by Saoirse Ronan), a semi-autobiographical tale of Gerwig’s upbringing in Northern California. Free Solo – Yosemite Mariposa County, California National Geographic Documentary Film Free Solo is a stunning, often nerve-racking, portrait of the free soloist climber Alex Honnold, as he prepares to achieve his lifelong dream: climbing the face of the world’s most famous rock – the 3,000ft El Capitan in Yosemite National Park – without a rope. Documentary filmmaker E. Chai Vasarhelyi and world-renowned photographer and mountaineer Jimmy Chin spent months observing Honnold as he mentally and physically prepared for the climb. The documentary,  which won an Academy Award and BAFTA for Best Documentary Feature, and seven Emmy Awards including Outstanding Cinematography for a Nonfiction Program, features beautiful shots of Yosemite. Point Break – The Islands of Tahiti  Point Break is an action thriller film about thrill-seeking criminals performing a series of daredevil stunts to steal money and gems. The film has a surf scene that takes place off the coast of France but was actually filmed in Teahupo’o, Tahiti. The scene used professional surfer, Laurie Towner, and was incredibly dangerous to film, with the film boats being secured with roll cages in case they went over the falls. There was a surfer shooting inside the wave tube which has never been done before, as a result of cameras weighing 10-15kg, making them easy to off-balance the filming surfer. This is an impressive scene to watch and will give viewers goosebumps. La La Land – LA, California The movie musical La La Land starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone rightfully garnered rave reviews and awards-season buzz following its release. The tap-dancing and singing duo are showcased in a love story that is as much about the pair as it is about Los Angeles. The jazz themes, references to old-Hollywood glamour, and aspirational premise make perfect use of LA’s most iconic locations as the backdrop. The good news for La La Land fans is that they can visit many of the movie’s locations in person as the film featured more than 40 sites around Los Angeles County. Skyfall Hashima Island – Kyushu, Japan The deserted island of James Bond’s adversary Silva in the movie Skyfallmight seem the result of a writer’s fantasy, but it exists. The island is called Hashima and is located off the coast of Japan. Commonly called Gunkanjima (meaning Battleship Island), it’s among 505 uninhabited islands in the Nagasaki Prefecture. The artificial island was one of the most densely populated places on earth. Over 5,000 people lived and worked on the tiny island. Developed during the first half of the 20th century for underground coal mines, the artificial island was built like a city to include hospitals, schools, shops, cinemas and even a cemetery. Active until 1974, the island became a ghost town after the coal mines became obsolete – making it one of the most memorable sites of the Bond series. Spirited Away Bathhouse – Ehime, Japan Of all of Studio Ghibli’s iconic films, Academy-Award-winning Spirited Away is the most internationally recognised. Fans of the film will instantly recognise Dogo Onsen in Matsuyama City as the bathhouse where most of the film takes place. Known as one of the oldest onsen towns in Japan, legend has it that Dogo Onsen was discovered when locals noticed a white heron healing its injured leg by dipping it into the hot spring water. One look at the majestic main house and visitors will understand t how Hiyao Miyazaki was inspired to include the destination in his film. Maverick returns to San Diego, California  In May, the hotly anticipated Top Gun: Maverick will be released and like the original film, much of it was shot (and set) in San Diego, California. Fans of the blockbuster have been waiting more than three decades for Tom Cruise to return to uniform and revive his Maverick character in a sequel. Cruise was spotted filming at Naval Air Station North Island in Coronado in 2021 and there are many other locations from the new and original film that travellers can visit, including Kansas City Barbeque, Point Loma Lighthouse, Lafayette Hotel, Swim Club and Bungalows and Naval Air Station Miramar. The latter delights San Diegans with an annual air show typically held in September. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian in Slovenia Slovenia’s naturally beautiful landscape makes it a fantastic backdrop for magical, fantasy lands and parts of the popular The Chronicles of Narnia sequel were shot in the incredible Soča Valley. The River Soča is recognised for its distinct emerald green colour and is considered one of the most beautiful rivers in Europe. Visitors can get out onto the water with a kayaking trip or hike along the mountainous landscape which towers above it.

  • The Five Biggest St. Patrick's Day Parades in the World

St. Patrick’s Day parades are making their triumphant return this year after a two year absence due to covid-19. Ireland isn’t the only country to pull out all the stops for the event. The day is celebrated all over the world. Here are the five biggest and boldest St. Patrick’s Day parades in the world. The Five Biggest St. Patrick’s Day Parades in the World Dublin, Ireland Dublin, Ireland is the home to the St. Patrick’s Day parade. Although the festivities take place all over Ireland every 17th of March, Dublin is without a doubt the most popular. The streets become crammed with thousands of people embracing, dancing, and singing with each other as they enjoy the normally flamboyant parade that roams through the streets of the city centre. The festivities generally run through to the night time which makes for one of the most epic night outs in town in Ireland all year. New York City, USA This is a no brainer. I think its quite well known how seriously St. Patrick’s Day is taken in the states, especially in New York. There is a very large Irish community around New York, so it was only natural that the day would continue to grow more popular each year. What makes the New York Patrick’s Day so massive is the amount of spectators it garners. Generally there is around two million people attending the event each year! Also, there is a massive number of participants with 150,000 to 250,000 people entertaining the crowds with dancing, singing and the traditional bagpipes. London, England Our next door neighbors. It makes sense that London would have a big parade each year because like New York, there is a large Irish community in England’s capital. Although London celebrate Paddy’s Day every year, they do so with their own little twist. Every year, they have a different theme to the parade. Although there is a theme, the roots of a traditional St. Patrick’s Day parade are still evident with imaginatively designed floats, marching bands, sports clubs, and Irish-dancing schools from across the UK entertaining the large crowds. Buenos Aires, Argentina A little unknown one here. Buenos Aries, surprisingly has the largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in South America. Argentina’s capital is home to over 500,000 Irish people, which means that there is a demand for some Patrick’s Day festivities in the area. Food and beer stands line the streets of Avenida de Mayo while elves, fairies, bagpipers and Irish dancers will honor the homeland with the parade. The event is hosted by the Argentina-Ireland Association, the Buenos Aires city government and the Irish Embassy in Buenos Aires. Montreal, Canada The Montreal St. Patrick’s Day Parade has been celebrated yearly since 1824, making it the oldest and largest after NYC’s parade. The festivities are generally quite traditional in Canada with Irish dancers, singers and bagpipes with one exception, they all drink a green beer. The Paddy’s Day parade in Montreal is ran over a three hour period with hundreds of floats, marching bands, performers and revellers march along Sainte-Catherine Street.
