  • Rise of the Coolcation: Travel Trend in 2024

What’s the Trend? For many people, summer holidays traditionally meant chasing the sun, revelling in the heat, and basking on sandy beaches. However, with recent years bringing intense, record-breaking temperatures, there’s a shift in travel preferences. Many are now opting for “coolcations” in temperate destinations, which also have the advantage of being less crowded. Listed as a top trend in 2024 by Conde Naste , this trend allows for the exploration of the rich culture of Helsinki to enjoying Estonia’s lush forests and Poland’s beautiful long sandy Baltic beaches, there’s something for everyone. Why Will It Matter in 2024? With 2023 officially the hottest year on record, travellers are reconsidering trips to traditional hotspots like the South of France and Sicily, especially during peak heatwave seasons in July and August. A survey by luxe travel network Virtuoso found that 82% of its clients are considering destinations with more moderate weather in 2024. Intrepid Travel highlights the rising popularity of destinations such as Iceland, Finland, Scotland, and Latvia. “We’re seeing an increase in those holidaying further north,” says Andrea Godfrey of Regent Holidays. “Scandinavia and the Baltics offer a more pared-back style of holiday but have lovely beaches, forests, and lakes for both relaxation and adventure activities.” Cooler temperatures are particularly well-suited for family travel. Top Coolcation Destinations Oslo, Norway Oslo is an ideal coolcation spot for a summer city break. Its proximity to nature parks and a variety of outdoor activities makes it perfect for family-friendly excursions. Visitors can explore museums like the Munch Museum and the Vigeland Museum or take a paddle excursion on the Oslo Fjord. For an overnight adventure, the surrounding forests provide a scenic backdrop. Oslo’s waterfront has been revitalized, offering opportunities for traditional kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), and even urban fjord-sauna experiences. Helsinki, Finland Helsinki , the capital of Finland, boasts a rich culture and relaxed vibe. Summer visitors can enjoy al fresco dining, nearby beaches, and islands. Each August, the Suvilahti area of Helsinki hosts the Flow Festival, a three-day music event featuring headliners and up-and-coming local talent. Set in the industrial area near Sörnäinen and the Kallio district, Flow Festival attracts over 80,000 visitors annually, offering interesting lighting, design, and technology displays. • Coldplay Achieves 59% Carbon Emission Reduction with Reduced Air Travel on Eco-Friendly World Tour

Coldplay has reduced their carbon emissions by 59% during the first two years of their eco-friendly Music of the Spheres world tour. The ‘Yellow’ hit makers will perform at Croke Park from August 29 to September 2. In 2021, Coldplay pledged to cut tour emissions by at least 50%, implementing eco-initiatives like electricity-generating dancefloors, exercise bike power, bamboo sets, solar panels, reduced air travel, and tree planting for each ticket sold. They have planted seven million trees and diverted 72% of tour waste for recycling and composting. Energy from solar panels, kinetic dancefloors, and power bikes has increased from 15 to 17 kWh per show, powering a smaller stage area and charging stations for the crew. The band also funded two solar-powered devices to remove ocean plastic. MIT’s Environmental Solutions Initiative verified these achievements. Coldplay expressed gratitude to their touring team and fans for contributing to these efforts, noting significant progress but acknowledging more work is needed. A report from July 2023 showed a 47% reduction in emissions. Amid scrutiny of musicians’ environmental impacts, other artists like Massive Attack and Billie Eilish have also committed to greener practices.

  • Lake Como: More Than Just a Lake. Its the Lake to Love!

Lake Como is a lake of glacial origin in the Lombardy region of northern Italy. It has an area of 146 square kilometers making it the third largest lake in Italy after Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore It is one of the deepest lakes in Europe, reaching depths of over 400 meters (1,300 feet), and spans an area of about 146 square kilometers (56 square miles). I visited this amazing destination in June two years ago and was blown away by it’s beauty. Lake Comois more than just a lake . It is breathtakingly beautiful, the water is so clear it mirrors the surrounding landscapes, it features lush gardens and charming architecture. Because of how it’s situated, surrounded by the Alps, and it’s unique Y-shape one can experience panoramic view from various angles. There are lakes, mountains, beautiful towns and villages to explore, each one more beautiful than the next. I’ve listed the few I managed to visit during my stay there. (1) Como – The elegant town of Como is the primary and commercial centre of Lake Como and is the perfect starting point to explore the many locations around the Lake. (2) Varenna – A small picturesque village lying on a promontory along the eastern bank of Lake Como . We stayed in Varenna for three nights and had the most wonderful time. From here, we were able to explore the surrounding towns and villages. The distance between towns are such that you can visit at least 3/4 local villages by local transportation (bus or ferry). Varenna is a very pretty town, in fact I’d go as far to say it was my favourite. There are numerous restaurants and cafes situated in a small circular cove overlooking the pristine waters. It is so relaxing to just sit there whilst sipping a glass or wine or enjoying a home made gelato and watching the colourful tiny boats bobbing up and down, waiting to experience the most amazing sunsets you’ll ever see. It’s a truly spectacular experience, one I will hold in my memory forever. (2) Bellagio – There are few places as romantic as Lake Como , and even fewer lakeside towns as charming as Bellagio . Bellagio , also known as ‘ The Pearl of the lake ‘ is considered to be one of the best towns in Lake Como . It’s the most photogenic town on the lake. Filled with quaint artisan boutiques as well as beautiful stepped terraces, you can easily enjoy an afternoon taking in the sights. Be sure to bring a power bank with you, because I guarantee you’re going to need it. We didn’t get to spend enough time here so I’ve added it to my list of places I need to return to! (3) Lenno , Laglio & Menaggio – The lands of stunning villas owned by the rich and wealthy. i.e.. RichardBranson , Madonna , Donatella Versace , George Clooney , to name but a few, the list is endless! A great place to enjoy some celeb spotting and if you’re lucky you might even get a photo or two. The best way to see Lake Como is by boat, you can do a regular boat trip or you can hire a boat, or take the local ferries, it’s up to you. There are a number of ferries to choose from depending on the town you want to visit. Regardless of how you decide to explore, a tour of the Lake is a must, especially if you want to see the spectacular villas that are not visible from the streets. Apart from the stunning mountain scenery and the lush green landscape, there are so many beautiful villas to be seen. These villas in Lake Como are some of the most beautiful destinations in all of Italy. Some of them are open to the public for a small fee and are accessible by foot or taxiboat. We visited the well known Villa del Balbianello which was used as a filming location for Star Wars Episode ll in 2002 and again for James Bond Casino Royale in 2006. This villa is without doubt one of the most spectacular villas to be seen and offers guests unique and unmatched views of Italy’s most mesmerising lake. Villa del Balbianello will leave you breathless, thanks to its beautiful terraced gardens and picturesque structure. It’s a definite must see if you plan on visiting Lake Como . Each villa has it own unique charm and atmosphere, more often than not, they are surrounded by vast parks and magnificent botanical gardens. Lake Como is easily reached by train from Milan. We flew into Milan-Malpensa airport then took the non stop train to Milan Central Station which took approximately 35 minutes then the fast train to Lake Como another 45 minutes depending on which town you plan on staying in. There are lots of accommodation options to choose from. Luxury hotels and Airbnb are plentiful as are B&Bs just be sure to book well in advance. I would definitely recommend visiting in June, there are plenty of tourists but without the stifling crowds of July and August. Lake Como is not just a picture perfect destination, it’s a journey into a world where natural beauty and rich history converge. If you’ve yet to experience this Italian gem, now is the perfect time to start planning. Whether you’re drawn to its tranquil waters, the stunning mountains or just the Italian way of life, Lake Como promises a trip unlike any other.
