  • 5 Reasons You Need to Book a Lapland Holiday

Lapland isn’t only about the man in red and his furry friends. Imagine snow-covered forests, frozen lakes and swirling skies. Tucked away in northern Finland, Lapland’s fairytale-like landscape isn’t only for children, but adults too. Cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and husky sleigh rides all come to mind. That’s just half the story – it’s serious Northern Lights territory, too. So, leave the world behind for an adventure in the Arctic Circle. Skiing and Snowboarding Lapland’s buried in snow for around six months of the year. So, it’s hardly any surprise that it’s home to tonnes of cross-country skiing trails. Forget the Alps, try Levi or Yllas which are way less crowded. Yllas has the longest slope at three kilometres, while Levi’s ski resort tots up 48 runs, including three black ones. Plus, the borders aren’t left out, either. 01-Dec-24, Dublin to Lapland, Lapland Hotel Sirkanthati, 3 +, Levi, BB, 3 nights from €1,359pps or €4,029 (2+1) 04-Dec-24, Dublin to Lapland, Hotel Snow Princess, 3 , Yllas, FB, 4 nights from €1,659pps or €4,799 (2+1), €6,299 (2+2) The Northern Lights You don’t get much further north than Finnish Lapland, so it’s a great spot for chasing the elusive Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis. People travel from all over the world to try and catch a glimpse of this natural wonder. The lights have certain diva qualities – they’re about as unpredictable as you get. But, from November to April, you’re in with a fighting chance. If you do strike lucky, you’ll be treated to a real show – green, yellow and, sometimes, red lights dance through the pitch-black sky. You can often watch them glow from towns like  Levi . 08-Dec-24, Dublin, to Lapland,  Crazy Reindeer Hotel , 3*+, Levi, HB, 3 nights from €1,519pps or €4,469 (2+1) 04-Dec-24, Dublin to Lapland,  Lapland Hotel Sirkanthati , 3*, Levi, HB, 4 nights from €1,599pps or €4,639 (2+1) Snowmobiling The magical medley of frozen lakes, frosted forests and carpets of white snow – this is snowmobiling country. Adrenaline junkies are in for a treat. You can zip over the tundras at full throttle, slicing up the snow as you go. It’s also the perfect way to cram in as much of the scenery as possible. If you’re lucky, you might even be joined by the Northern Lights. Just make sure you wrap up warm – the temperatures rarely rise above freezing here. 01-Dec-24, Dublin to Lapland, Lapland Hotel Hetta, Hetta, HB, 3 nights from €1,519pps or €4,409 (2+1) Husky Sleigh Rides Snowmobiles aren’t the only way to get around in Lapland. Once upon a time, husky-drawn sleds were the only mode of transport. These days, they’re just for fun, serving up a huge adrenaline rush, as you speed along at speeds of up to 30 kilometres an hour. You’ll be pulled by a team of huskies – originally bred in Siberia to pull big, heavy loads across the tundra. They’re always raring to go, so you’ll need to hop onboard quickly. Depending on the resort, you’ll either be driven by an experienced guide or take the reins for yourself. 11-Dec-24, Dublin to Lapland, Lapland Hotel Sirkanthati, 3*+,  Levi , BB, 4 nights from €1,459pps or €4,269 (2+1) An Ice Bar When it comes to bars, you don’t get much cooler than this. Literally. You’ll find it inside Finland’s famous Snow Village, which is rebuilt from scratch every year. As the name suggests, it’s made from 20 million kilos of snow and around 350,000 kilos of ice. The temperature hovers around the -5°C mark, but you can warm up with a hot chocolate or a cocktail in the resort’s Ice Bar. Everything from the tables, benches and the bar is all carved out of ice. There’s also a candlelit Snow Restaurant, where food starts from €39 per person. Elsewhere, you can wander corridors full of ice art and bedrooms with ice-slab beds and snow walls.  If you choose to stay in Yllas a visit to the Snow Village is included in your trip. 08-Dec-24, Dublin to Lapland,  Lapland Hotel Saaga , 4*+, Yllas, BB, 3 nights from €1,359pps or €4,009 (2+1), €5,299 (2+2) Lapland Day Trip Or you can just visit for Lapland for the day! • History, Scenic Views and Fireworks in New Hampshire Pt.2

Emer Roche (Travel Times Editor) hopped on the bus along with Donna Kenny (Tour America) , Dee Burdock (American Holidays), Tony Lane (Visit USA) and Ciara Foley (Platinum Travel). They settled in to navigate through the Boston traffic (notably much lighter than the time spent living in Boston during ‘the big dig’ – a notorious infrastructure project which rerouted and buried the Central Artery, created tunnels, and improved transportation flow in the city). The gang made their way alongside the rest of the group towards New Hampshire. The bus stopped at White Mountains Attractions Visitor Centre, North Woodstock, and a brilliant guide named Meg took the microphone to provide informative background and charming anecdotes as they made their way to the Kancamagus Highway, spanning 34.5 miles along NH’s Rt. 112. The route is renowned for its vibrant autumn foliage, predominantly from maple trees, and designated an American Scenic Byway for its rich history. Everyone then boarded an old-fashioned train in North Conway Village, the station itself dating back to 1874, and enjoyed a 1-hour, 15-minute leisurely train ride through the mountains to Attiash. From there, it was straight to the Omni Mount Washington Resort , Bretton Woods, to check in. The beautiful hotel has a storied history, dating back to its opening in 1902. It has been a luxurious retreat for over a century, hosting notable figures and events, including the historic 1944 Bretton Woods International Monetary Conference, where the groundwork for the post-World War II economic order began. After a quick freshen up, the group boarded a coach for the Mount Washington Cog Railway . Everyone hopped aboard the world’s first mountain-climbing cog railway, and rode up to the top of the Northeast’s highest peak. There, the guests enjoyed the sunset and indulged in some delicious local food and drinks while taking in the stunning views. All this with biodiesel engines chugging away alongside century-old steam engines. The following day of the Summit was chock-full of exhibits and one-on-one appointments with delegates throughout greater New England, broken up by a lunch sponsored by the Rhode Island Commerce Corporation. Speeches and forecasts were shared by various speakers including Chris Thompson, President of Brand USA , and Mark Brodeur, Director of Tourism at Rhode Island Commerce Corporation , who announced that next year’s Summit event will take place in Rhode Island ! The evening ended with a New Hampshire Division of Travel & Tourism Development state dinner and fireworks, with most attendees dressed casually in their newly gifted New Hampshire t-shirts! More one-on-one appointments continued the following morning until coaches arrived to bring attendees back to the airport to return home.

With Ryanair offering flights as low as €19.99 in April, this sun-soaked paradise is a budget-friendly alternative to more crowded destinations. Travel Light: Resist the urge to overpack. Remember, you can purchase essentials like socks, shampoo, or jackets on the go. Choose a compact bag, ideal for easy carrying and fitting into overhead compartments, saving you from the burden of bulky luggage. Gate Check Before Beer Break: We’ve all seen that funny meme about checking where your gate is before going for a beer. It’s funny because it’s true. It’s easy to sit back with a pre-holiday drink and time will fly past leaving you under pressure to board- Make sure you know where you need to be before finding the nearest bar! Explore Beyond Guidebooks: Guidebooks offer valuable insights, but they often miss out on the latest hidden experiences and fun. Go beyond the guidebook recommendations to discover authentic local experiences, from off-the-beaten-path attractions to delicious restaurants. Embrace Slow Travel: Resist the temptation to cram your itinerary with endless activities. Slow down and enjoy each destination! Travel isn’t about quantity—it’s about quality. • Top Five Holiday Reads for Summer 2024

With summer right around the corner, it’s time to start planning holidays, and dusting off long-forgotten piles of books that have been sitting on the bedside table waiting to be opened. Unless of-course you prefer to upload to your kindle and make space in your travel case! If you’re like me and love nothing more than sitting in the garden, engrossed in a good book, or even better, lounging on a beach, soaking up the warmth of the sun after a seemingly endless winter, you’re in the right place. Here I round up five reads for summer holidays 2024 which you won’t go wrong reading: “Funny Story” by Emily Henry Henry is the queen of the funny romance read. Happy Place was a terrific beach read, and her latest, Funny Story , follows Daphne as she meets her dream man, Peter, falls in love with him, and moves back to his small hometown, only for her fiancé to realise that he’s actually in love with his childhood best friend – Petra. With limited funds, Daphne proposes that Miles (Petra’s ex) move in with her in a dastardly plan to make their exes jealous. Will the plan work? (DUH!) I’m so excited for this beach read in 2024! “This Could Be Everything” by Eva Rice From the author of the modern classic The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets comes a feel-good novel about hope, love, and the powerful bond between sisters. It’s 1990. The Happy Mondays are in the charts, a 15-year-old called Kate Moss is on the cover of The Face magazine, and Julia Roberts wears thigh-high boots for the poster of a new movie called Pretty Woman . This Could Be Everything is a coming-of-age story with its roots under the pavements of a pre-Richard Curtis-era Notting Hill that has all but vanished. It’s about what happens when you start looking after something more important than yourself. “First Lie Wins” by Ashley Elston A thrilling and unputdownable thriller of stolen identities, romance, and espionage in a small town in Louisiana. I discovered this one on actress Reese Witherspoon’s online book club (an excellent spot for book inspiration). Evie Porter has it all. A beautiful house, a perfect partner, and potentially a new close group of friends. Except Evie Porter is a stolen identity. And now a woman with ‘Evie Porter’s’ real name has just turned up in this small town. Cue a lot of mystery and intrigue. I couldn’t put First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston down. If you’re looking for a page-turning beach read in 2024 that you’ll read in a single setting, then First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston is going to be right up your street! “The Playdate” by Clara Dillon Playdate is a psychological drama about motherhood and the long-term effects of bullying – school-gate politics but with a menacing undertone. Sara has just moved to Dublin and is keen for her shy, sensitive nine-year-old daughter Lexie to fit in at her new school. But in her over-eagerness to make friends, Sara manages to inadvertently offend the ‘tricky ‘ mother of Polly, the most popular child in Lexie’s class, who then starts to bully Lexie. Desperate to fix the trouble she has caused, Sara invites Polly on a playdate. But the playdate ends in catastrophe with a child being rushed to hospital on the brink of death – and that’s when things take a truly dark turn. One of my favourite genres is domestic noir, about the darkness that can lurk beneath the cosy veneer of civilisation. ”The Whispers” by Audrey Audrain An unnamed man returns home from a romantic rendezvous, opts not to join his wife in bed, and settles in the spare room. Hours later he wakes to a phone call from a woman who tells him, “Something terrible has happened”. And with that, we’re off, piecing together the puzzle in Ashley Audrain’s highly anticipated second novel, The Whispers. The story spins out over the course of one week, in the alternating voices of the women who live in close proximity to one another while a child on their road lies in a coma in the hospital. This is a story that explores the quiet sacrifices of motherhood, the intuitions that we silence and the complexities of our closest friendships. There are many more books that haven’t made this list, including the wonderful Tana French’ s latest ”The Hunter”, so you could always get started on your summer reading list now instead!

  • Costa Del Sol & Top Choice For a Girls Weekend Away

Hola Chicas!’ is one of my favourite greetings of all time. It comes from how my friends and I greet each other, and from the many weekend trips to Spain we’ve taken over the years. I have been on many girlie weekends to many different countries and Spain still ranks high on my list of top destinations for fun in the sun with the girls. Whether it’s sunbathing, shopping, or just sitting around eating, drinking and chatting, the Costa del Sol has it all. All combined with great nightlife and amazing beaches, you’re guaranteed a fantastic weekend away, far from the busyness of everyday life. A girls weekend can be just what the doctor ordered. Girlfriends understand if you’re going through tough times and need some emotional support. They empathize with what you’re feeling, because chances are – they’ve been there too. And there is nothing more powerful than connecting with friends who are on the same page as you. Well. Maybe one thing…recharging with your girlfriends at the Costa del Sol . So, pack your bags, gather your gal pals and head off for a weekend of fun in the sun! Costa del Sol (literally “Coast of the Sun”) where the sun shines for most of the year, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. The Costa del Sol has many vibrant coastal towns to choose from for your weekend away. Each one is characterized by their own individual beauty. These towns, such as Marbella, Torremolinos and Fuengirola boast stunning Mediterranean beaches, lively promenades and magnificent marinas. The choice is endless. The Costa del Sol has a great variety of bars and nightclubs spread out across the coast. Especially in the summer months, Marbella is always in a party state of mind and is well known for its vibrant lifestyle with numerous places to party. Benalmadena Marina was always one of our favourites if we wanted to dance the night away. There are plenty of nightclubs and bars to choose from, most of them offering ‘two for the price of one’ drinks and free shots if you’re interested. They get going around midnight, and last until the early hours of the morning. Almost all of these clubs are set next to the coast offering amazing views over the Mediterranean Sea, and because of the huge amount of golf clubs here, Costa del Sol is often referred to as “Costa del Golf”. With more than 70 golf courses to choose from, it’s a haven for golf lovers from around the world. As for the beaches, I could go on and on about the beautiful beaches of Costa del Sol. There are endless beaches to stroll along, all are spotless and well maintained with comfortable sunbeds and beach umbrellas available to rent. Each beach has its own unique charm and atmosphere. Some are vibrant and bustling, lined with beach bars and water sports facilities. Others are more secluded and tranquil. One of my favourites is Los Boliches in Fuengirola , it’s a long stretch of sandy beach offering traditional Andalusian vibes, lined with palm trees and boasting wide pathways where locals sit on benches to people watch. This beach has been awarded the Blue Flag , a distinction awarded by the European Foundation for Environmental Education . In 2023 alone, Costa Del Sol had a record number of 39 Blue Flag beaches. This is the gold standard for public facilities and cleanliness, so whichever resort you visit you can be sure you’ll find a magnificent beach close by. Another thing I love about the beaches are the vendors, who walk the beach selling fake handbags, sunglasses, jewelry and sarongs. There’s always great banter and lots of bargains to be had. There are plenty of chiringuitos (Beach bars) to choose from, all serving drinks and tapas. My favourite is called Madrid Playa . This chiringuito offers two sunbeds, an umbrella and a bottle of prosecco for €20 for the whole day, sure how could you resist? They also offer beach side service, so you don’t even have to leave your sunbed for lunch. It’s a no-brainer for me and the girls! I’ve spent many a girlie weekend on this beach soaking up the sun, laughing and chatting with the girls, solving the problems of the world, reminiscing and making new plans and creating lots of memories. It really is the best therapy. Prioritizing a girls weekend can do more for your mental health than you might think. It clears your mind, de-stresses and enables you to come back completely refreshed, all of which makes you a better you! If you’re looking for your own girls weekend away adventure, visit Booking.com for accommodation in the region. Aer Lingus and Ryanair operate daily flights from Dublin to Malaga. • 7 Tips for Solo Travel

Travel experts at  StressFreeCarRental.com  have revealed seven top tips to ensure lone holidaymakers stay safe on a solo adventure. Solo travel is expected to be a big trend in 2024 , with bookings increasing by 20% compared to 2023. Despite the surge in holidaymakers looking to jet off alone, safety is still a major concern for the majority of travellers.  Almost 70% of female travellers say personal safety is a leading factor in them not embarking on a trip alone.  Downloading a VPN before travelling can help solo travellers to enhance their security, and stop hackers from accessing bank accounts and social media profiles while alone and vulnerable. Solo travellers must take extra precautions to protect themselves by learning the country’s emergency phone numbers.  Other tips include sharing their location with family and friends, knowing basic phrases and checking insurance policies. John Charnock, CEO of  StressFreeCarRental.com  said:  “It is normal to feel anxious about travelling into unknown territory, and the lack of companionship can leave people feeling more vulnerable to dangers.  “Travelling alone is considered risky by many, but taking simple steps like downloading a VPN and buying a worldwide sim card beforehand can help keep jet setters safe. “We advise solo travellers to take extra precautions to protect themselves, including by sharing their live location with a trusted contact, and learning important phrases in the local language. ” StressFreeCarRental’s Top Seven Safety Tips for Solo Travellers: Sign Up for a VPN Using a VPN on an international trip will ensure sensitive information doesn’t get intercepted and helps with privacy and security, which is important for a solo traveller. A good travel VPN can also provide access to geo-restricted content, help travellers avoid censorship and even save money on airline tickets. Share Live Location There are many apps around to keep people safe by sharing locations in real time. Turn on the live location features for trusted contacts at home, but always keep them updated on changes to your itinerary.  Worldwide Sim Cards  Purchase an international SIM card before arriving at a destination that works around the globe to stay connected and ease anxiety. It is important to have a wifi connection for safety reasons, whether there is an emergency, or simply for navigation purposes.  Study Important Phrases in the Local Language Anything can happen when alone, so prepare for emergencies by learning key phrases in the local language such as ‘Help me.’ Learn Phone Numbers Solo travellers should learn the local emergency number for the emergency service out there. They should also learn personal contact numbers from home in case a phone is lost or broken. Insurance Travel insurance can protect travellers from trip cancellation, while medical insurance can cover unexpected injury costs and luggage insurance can recover losses from theft. Insurance can protect solo travellers in a range of circumstances, and a comprehensive policy is recommended if travelling a long way for a long time.  Women Only Rooms If staying in a hostel, females can often request to stay in a women-only room, which can make them feel more comfortable.

  • Rising Interest in Camping Holidays

According to Irish digital marketing agency VROOM Digital , online searches for camping holidays are up 250% in 2024. For decades, French summer campsite holidays have been a beloved tradition for families seeking adventure, relaxation, and unforgettable memories. Eurocamp has been facilitating French summer camp holidays since 1973 – the company celebrated its 50th anniversary last year. Eurocamp’s story began in Brittany with its first parc, a time when cross-channel ferries were the only traveling option. While sailing still holds its charm, air travel is a faster option for time-constrained parents. Today, Eurocamp boasts parcs in eight other countries, ranging from Spain to Croatia and the Netherlands to Italy. However, France continues to reign as a top choice due to its diverse culture, stunning landscapes, and budget-friendly camping opportunities, making it the perfect destination for family adventures. One of the most beloved regions in France for campsite holidays is the enchanting South of France. Known for its beauty, gastronomy, and exquisite wines, this region offers an unparalleled experience. France presents an enviable selection of small, picturesque places for camping, and one such gem is La Chapelle campsite in Argeles sur Mer . Situated within the vibrant Argelès Plage resort and near the charming town of Collioure , La Chapelle exudes a peaceful countryside ambiance, embodying the authentic essence of French life. Its nifty and comfortable mobile homes are kitted out with two or three bedrooms, a bathroom and shower, a kitchen, and most importantly – excellent air conditioning. Nestled in the foothills of the Pyrénées , this classic parc boasts breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding vineyards and majestic mountains. The site itself is clean and extremely well-run, shrouded in mature trees which provide beautiful, dappled evening light and decks to people watch the multi-generational French families bustle about their business. The pool has waterslides and a bar, as well as mountain views. An Intermarché is minutes away where you can pick up all sorts of delicious food to barbecue for dinner. There is a laundromat on the site too, so you can pack light and wash your clothes while there. La Chapelle’s location on the Mediterranean, south of Perpignan, places it in the heart of what used to be North Catalonia , infusing it with a captivating Franco-Spanish vibe. Ochre-painted buildings, street signs in Catalan, and the occasional strains of flamenco music remind visitors of this unique blend of cultures. Hidden from the road by a spread of trees, the campsite is adorned with an old stone wall, meandering along the rugged cliffs. The site overlooks three exclusive pebble beaches, accessible only to campers. A 15-minute walk along the promenade leads to a bustling hub of activity. Alternatively, families can rent bikes for the week, making exploration even more fun, especially for kids and dare I say, city-kids who will adore the freedom. The promenade boasts a plethora of restaurants, bars, and markets, perfect for souvenir shopping and immersion into local life. No camping experience in France would be complete without savouring mouth-watering pastries and fresh coffees from an authentic boulangerie. La Chapelle campsite has its own onsite boulangerie, ensuring that each morning begins with the delightful aroma of freshly baked goods and great coffee. For those seeking a brief break from the campsite, the magical town of Collioure is just a short distance away. This small fishing village in the south of France famously inspired Fauvist painters like Henri Matisse and Andre Derain in the early 20th century. Dining here is a joy – fresh shrimp, juicy steaks, and incredible Languedoc rosé. The winding medieval streets are car-free, giving a lovely sense of a slower pace. Before returning to the campsite, it might be a pleasant idea to pick up a couple of bottles of Cornet & Co Collioure rosé for your mobile home fridge. Flights: Book straight into Perpignan. Only 2.5 hours with Aer Lingus and Ryanair Restaurant: La Bodeguita, 18 rue Vauban, 66190 Collioure, France Wine shop: Vins D’auteurs, 6 Pl. • Travel Tip Tuesday with Airhelp

AirHelp , a travel tech company supporting passengers with flight disruptions, has analysed Irish flight data from a five-day period  (28th April to 2nd May 2023)  to reveal the best destinations to fly to, and days to travel, to avoid flight disruptions this Early May Bank Holiday. The data indicates that more than 294,000 Irish passengers had flights scheduled during this period last year. The first two days of May were the busiest, with 121,000 people departing from Irish airports across the two days. Bank Holiday Disruption Analysis Looking at the data reveals that nearly 67,000 passengers suffered from disruptions when travelling from an Irish airport during the five days last year. Of those passengers, 4,200 faced flight cancellations and over 5,700 were eligible for compensation from their airline. Friday 28th of April was the best day to travel last year, with more than 44,000 passengers departing on time from Ireland and only 400 people impacted by flight cancellations. This is closely followed by Tuesday 2nd of May, with 43,700 Irish passengers leaving for their trips with no disruptions. On the other hand, the most disrupted day was the 1st of May (Bank Holiday Monday), with 18,000 passengers facing flight cancellations or delays of more than three hours when departing from Irish airports. What’s more, 2,500 people travelling on this date last year were entitled to compensation, which equates to 44% of the total number of Irish passengers who could claim compensation from their airline across the five day period. Best Destinations to Avoid Disruption AirHelp also analysed the top ten destinations to fly to over the same period, based on those with the most punctual arrivals. The United Kingdom (73,000), the United States (25,300) and Spain (25,000) took the top spots, with the most early or on-time flight arrivals from Irish airports. These were closely followed by Germany (13,000) and Italy (11,700). The data therefore indicates that short-haul flights to Europe and flights to the United States are likely to be the best options for holidaymakers to avoid disruptions this year. CEO of AirHelp, Tomasz Pawliszyn, comments: “Thanks to our database – one of the most reliable and accurate collections of flight data in the world – we can provide passengers with insights on airport performance from specific times of the year to help passengers avoid disruptions. Data from last year highlights the best days and destinations for travelling around the Early May Bank Holiday. We encourage anyone impacted by flight disruptions to check their eligibility for compensation and recommend that all passengers know their rights to reduce the impact of future disruptions, should they face them.” According to Europe’s air passenger rights laws, travellers are entitled to compensation for delays of more than three hours, cancellation of their flight or denied boarding – all where the airline is at fault. Air passengers who have experienced interruptions have a period of three years to claim, being able to check their eligibility for compensation for free and file a claim in a matter of minutes through the form at  AirHelp – #1 Air Passenger Rights Experts
