  • St. Regis Red Sea Resort Unveils Avant-garde Architecture and Sustainable Design Details

The St. Regis Red Sea Resort  in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia welcomed guests to its pristine white sand shores earlier this year. The resort is the first private island to open in one of the Kingdom’s luxury regenerative tourism destinations on the west coast of the country, The Red Sea.  Located on Ummahat Island in the Al Wajh Lagoon, a pristine private island off the coast of Saudi Arabia and accessed only by chartered boat or seaplane from the newly opened Red Sea International Airport, The St. Regis Red Sea Resort is surrounded by crystal-clear and vivid blue waters, white sandy beaches and thriving coral reefs. The resort features an expansive arrival pavilion, 90 overwater and beachfront villas offering one-to-four-bedroom accommodation and a private pool, a signature spa, high-tech gym, outdoor pools, water sports centre, and a children’s club with an outdoor adventure play area. Exceptional fine dining is experienced at five unique culinary concepts serving local produce. Every stay is enhanced by the renowned St. Regis Butler service and a curated selection of signature rituals. “A gateway to the undiscovered wonders of this exciting destination, The St. Regis Red Sea Resort heralds a new level of island luxury through a design scheme that embodies a sense of place, sustainable elements, and the St. Regis brand’s legacy of avant-garde style,” said Tony Coveney, General Manager, The St. Regis Red Sea Resort. Nature-Driven Design Designed by architect Kengo Kuma and interior design firm Kristina Zanic Consultants, the resort’s design draws inspiration from natural elements with bold and intricate references to the island’s surrounding vibrant coral reefs and rich marine life, and the sweeping sand dunes found on the mainland. The structures and interiors embody the scenic destination through a nature-driven design narrative inspired by the movement of the wind and the forms it creates in the sand and sea. Interior spaces and furnishings take on organic forms with soft curves and spiral shapes. Fabrics are natural and tactile, and the colour palette uses a neutral desert-inspired base imbued with blue, green, and coral tones found in the local marine life and biodiversity. The resort’s elegant interiors flow outwards to create a sense of barefoot luxury, inviting guests to relax and feel at one with the natural landscape. Nestled on an undisturbed white sand beach with stunning vistas over the azure water, the Dune Villas reflect the shape of sweeping desert sand formations. Perched overwater and connected by elevated walkways, the Coral Villas, which offer direct access to the sea from each deck, take the form of shells featuring curved lines, spiral shapes, and a flowing movement. The open and spacious villas seamlessly blend the outdoors inwards. Each villa is well-positioned to capture the spectacular views from sunrise to sunset, and at dark, each private deck is a place for stargazing. Elegantly designed and thoughtfully curated, the secluded villas offer a private place to unwind in a distinct style synonymous with the St. Regis brand. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame picturesque sea views and flood the living spaces, bedrooms, and bathrooms with natural light. Artworks featured throughout the villas are made entirely from natural materials including sculptural dyed fabric wall hangings and embroidered fabric artwork in natural wood frames. Every piece is hand-embellished, and the subtle patterns in the art reflect the musical wind narrative. Subtle accessories include custom glazed ceramic pieces that are reflective of the local sea life. Bespoke Interiors Using Sustainable Materials The St. Regis Red Sea Resort showcases its environmental harmony through the meticulous design of its dining venues and spa. Each space draws inspiration from the natural beauty of its surroundings. Nesma, the resort’s all-day dining venue, captures the essence of the gentle island breeze and the tranquillity of beachside dining. A harmonious blend of indoor and outdoor spaces where natural materials such as wicker, cane, rope, and timber result in durable yet elegant furniture. Floor-to-ceiling rope screens add a sense of privacy while inviting the outside in, complemented by overhanging linen panels that soften the interior with a touch of organic texture. The space is animated with vibrant accents – blue rattan chairs and plum-coloured lounge seats are set against a backdrop of a mosaic stone floor that mimics the serene movement of rippling pools with leaf-patterned plaster finishes. A row of statement rattan floor lamps illuminate the beachside venue. Gishki 45 presents a fusion of beach resort style and Asian aesthetic, marked by an origami-inspired ceiling that adds a dynamic element to the space. The restaurant’s design is anchored by wooden tables with angled legs, set atop a custom terrazzo marble floor that echoes the linear patterns of chopsticks. Accents of aqua, set against neutral beige and bamboo tones, draw inspiration from the nearby Blue Hole, with pendant lights featuring watery blue glass shades and tie-dye cushions reflecting the underwater theme. The bar counter and walls are adorned with a custom-made stacked glass finish, adding texture and vibrancy, while webbed cane screens offer privacy and natural texture to the dining experience. Adjacent to Gishki 45, the St. Regis Bar immerses guests in an underwater experience through its use of deep marine blue tones, creams, and silvers. A striking hand-painted mural, depicting a shimmery abstract underwater scene dominates the space, complemented by lounge-style seating that mixes rattan with dark timber and vibrant blue upholstery. The organic patterns on soft rugs underfoot and an aqua stacked glass finish on the curved bar counter subtly maintain continuity with the adjacent dining venue, creating a mesmerising aquatic ambiance. Tilina is a sophisticated ‘reeftop’ overwater restaurant for seafood enthusiasts, set against the breathtaking backdrop of panoramic ocean views. The design features exposed radial beams on the ceiling that mirror the flowing rhythm of the sea, while multi-coloured curved tiles on the walls evoke the vibrant hues and patterns of fish scales. A champagne-toned bar with a mother of pearl finish adds a touch of elegance, and tall black armchairs in webbed cane add to the formal sophistication, making Tilina a jewel in the resort’s culinary crown. The Beach Club is a laid back setting for poolside fresh light bites and mocktails, with blue and white deck chairs and sun loungers reflecting the colours of the surrounding sea and sky. Communal dining tables crafted from live edge wood are perfect for social gatherings, while private cabanas with beaded wooden screens inspired by wind chimes offer more intimate spaces for relaxation in the seaside ambiance. The St. Regis Spa, an expansive and tranquil sanctuary, continues the marine theme with a hammered bronze reception counter and tall macrame screens that welcome guests into a world of relaxation. The spa bar features tall glass chandeliers resembling jellyfish, and the wet zone boasts a feature ceiling of curved and hammered metal panels mimicking concentric pool ripples interplaying with the serene and indulgent atmosphere. Tile patterns inspired by seashells adorn the spa floors, and shimmery blue mother-of-pearl finishes illuminate the bathroom walls with tactile sculptural art pieces made of natural fibre and straw bringing the calming influence of nature indoors. “This project has been an extraordinary journey, filled with inspiration from its breathtaking locale and an exceptional architectural vision,” said designer Kristina Zanic. “Our approach was to capture the essence of the place and showcase its natural beauty and unique features. With that in mind, we set out to create a serene atmosphere that invites guests to kick off their shoes, unwind, and connect with the beautiful surroundings.” As part of the country’s regenerative development philosophy to adopt sustainability practices and innovation, all the interiors have been developed in accordance with LEED platinum certification guidelines. The certification creates healthy, highly efficient, cost-saving green buildings that improve environmental performance, from carbon footprint to indoor environmental quality. Harnessing innovative technology to create a sustainable destination began at the early stages of the resort’s development. Powered by one hundred percent renewable energy generated by solar power, it is one of the world’s largest battery storage facilities situated on the mainland. Emphasis on waste reduction and recycling is at the heart of daily operations to deliver advanced water treatment and comprehensive waste management solutions, and a plastic-free environment.

  • Glamping Villa Hanz: Where Tradition Meets Modern Luxury in the Heart of Japan

Nestled in the serene beauty of Japan’s Fuji Five Lakes region, Glamping Villa Hanz Kawaguchiko offers an unparalleled retreat amidst nature’s splendour. Surrounded by the tranquil waters of Lake Kawaguchiko and awe-inspiring vistas of Mount Fuji, this haven beckons travellers to unwind and reconnect with the outdoors. Embracing the ethos of “Relax if you can,” the villa fosters a harmonious atmosphere, encouraging communication and experiential learning. From cosy half-timbered villas to igloo-like Pao tents and a restored traditional Japanese Guest House, accommodation choices cater to varied preferences, each offering modern comforts intertwined with cultural nuances. With a plethora of outdoor activities ranging from guided forest tours to water sports and star-gazing, Glamping Villa Hanz promises an immersive and soul-nourishing experience amidst the wonders of nature. This unique destination emerges from a rich history spanning nearly two decades, marked by determination, meticulous planning, and a deep commitment to preserving Japan’s traditional architecture and way of life. Established in 2005 with the acquisition of a former onsen facility, Glamping Villa Hanz began its journey with a vision to redefine luxury hospitality. Overcoming challenges such as the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy in 2008, the team pressed forward, envisioning a guest house-style Jjimjilbang, a traditional Korean bathhouse and a sauna-cantered resort inspired by the Therme Vals thermal baths in Switzerland. The dream expanded further to include the creation of a kiln-style sauna and cottage facility, makibi, celebrating the harmony of “Fire and Water” and the essence of “Return to Nature/Slowlife.” In 2014, Glamping Villa Hanz took a significant step forward with the acquisition of three traditional Japanese houses, including the illustrious Ogasawara House and the revered Itakura Folk Museum. Each structure was meticulously restored, blending centuries-old craftsmanship with modern amenities. The Ogasawara House, dating back to the 1550s and rebuilt during the Tenpō Reforms in 1840, now stands as the Honkan, boasting a rare Kirizuma-zukuri style roof and a dynamic Fukinuke atrium, offering guests a glimpse into Japan’s feudal past. The word Honkan can be literally translated to “Main Buildling”. It is the first building that the guests see when entering the resort. It is also the building that has a wine cellar, Japanese style bath, bar, and the terrace to enjoy breakfast with the view of Mt. Fuji. The architecture of the Honkan reflects the intricate craftsmanship of its time, boasting rare features like the dynamic Fukinuke atrium and the traditional Zashiki rooms adorned with Japanese calligraphy. The Ogasawara clan’s illustrious history, from their role as protectors of Shinano province to their revival during the Azuchi-Momoyama period, is woven into the very fabric of Glamping Villa Hanz. Complementing the Honkan is the Guest House, housed within the Itakura Folk Museum, a symbol of Meiji-era architecture in Joetsu Niigata. Renowned for its Chumon-Zukuri style and Kayabuki-yane thatched roof, the Guest House offers guests a glimpse into rural Japanese life while providing modern amenities for a comfortable stay. ” We wanted to preserve the essence of Japanese tradition while offering guests a luxurious retreat,” says the team behind Glamping Villa Hanz . “Our aim is to provide an immersive experience where guests can reconnect with nature and immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of Japan.” Located in the picturesque surroundings of Kawaguchiko, Glamping Villa Hanz offers more than just a retreat; it’s a sanctuary for weary souls seeking respite from the hustle and bustle of city life. With its proximity to Mount Fuji, onsen resorts, and a plethora of outdoor activities, the resort beckons travellers to explore the wonders of the region. Nestled in Belltown and a must-visit for every music fan, the venue relocated a few years ago, however, it is still an unparalleled, independent music sanctuary for artists and fans alike against the backdrop of Seattle’s music legacy. Nirvana last performed at the club on 4 October 1992 and was dubbed as a “secret opening act”. Central Saloon Central Saloon is said to be the “birthplace of grunge” with the likes of Alice in Chains and Soundgarden performing at the venue in the 80s. In the same decade, popular grunge label Sub Pop Records was born. Inspiring an unpolished and unapologetic sound, Central was the performance venue for many of Sub Pop’s bands. On April 16th 1988, Nirvana played their first home show at the venue. Consequently, founders of Sub Pop, Jonathan Poneman and Bruce Pavitt saw them perform for the first time. A relationship formed and the label would go on to release the band’s debut album. Viretta Park As he has no grave, a popular spot for fans to pay their respects is in Seattle’s Viretta Park, which borders the house where Kurt once resided with Courtney Love. The park has become a memorial for Cobain with two benches marked with messages from fans. The park is an opportunity for fans to remember where they were when headlines broke. Screwdriver Bar Nicknamed “Rock N Roll Utopia”, Screwdriver Bar was once a rehearsal space for Nirvana between the release of Bleach and Nevermind. After deciding to not renew their lease, the space sat empty until a group of friends decided to turn it into a bar where customers could drink and enjoy music. The dimly lit basement serves beer & cocktails, with a rock ‘n’ roll jukebox and pinball machines to make guests feel at home. Linda’s Tavern Opening earlier that year, Linda’s Tavern was one of Cobain’s old haunts and would be regularly visited by the grunge star. Also known as the “grunge Cheers”, this laid-back bar was the last place he was seen in public before his death. Today, fans can head to the cowboy themed tavern and sit in the booth where Cobain was last seen. The Edgewater Hotel The Edgewater Hotel has had numerous rock ‘n’ roll royalty come through its doors, including Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. Nirvana was no stranger to the historic hotel, with one of Kurt Cobain’s final interviews being held on a guest room balcony in August 1933. Guests can stay in one of the rock star themed suites – The Pearl Jam Suite is a popular request featuring grunge décor, a guitar, amplifier and record player. Museum of Pop Culture As the birthplace of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Jimi Hendrix to name a few, Seattle’s music heritage is world-renowned. The eclectic music scene is no better appreciated than at the Museum of Pop Culture (MOPOP). Designed by Frank Gehry, the eccentric, colourful building is said to represent the energy and fluidity of music. Inside, there are permanent exhibitions on the aforementioned musicians, a guitar gallery displaying instruments by artists such as Slash and Dave Grohl, and a sound lab where visitors can make their own music. Fans can play tribute at ‘Nirvana: Taking Punk to the Masses’ – a permanent exhibit offering an intimate look at the band’s past, with more than 200 rare artefacts, photographs, and oral histories. The series that everyone was talking about is filmed in some stunning locations. • What is TikTok's Popular 'Soft Travel' Trend?

If you haven’t heard of the ‘soft travel’ trend yet, chances are you’ll spot it soon. It taps into a lot of social media’s ‘soft life’ vibes – which originated in Nigeria and was made popular by African-American women long before it made its mark on TikTok, with #softlife racking up 228.5k posts and counting – where leaning into a less stressful, more enriched life is the goal. But what does soft travel really mean, and why is it becoming popular? There was a time when the goal of any holiday was simple – to relax and unwind. Does soft travel take us back to this? There are crossovers with slow travel, which is all about slowing down, taking a green approach, and being more mindful. To do this authentically, holidaymakers should stay in one area for a long duration, immerse themselves in local customs, and support local businesses. While ‘soft travel’ also encourages tourists to be environmentally conscious, opting to use public transport, cycling, or walking if they stay in one place for a longer period. ‘Soft travel’ has become an extension of this as most of us experience burnout during our day-to-day lives and want to fully immerse ourselves and relax when on holiday to improve our mental health.

  • Travel Tip Tuesday with Iglu Cruise

Seasickness is a major concern for first-time cruise passengers. Many passengers are reluctant to book a cruise due to the fear of feeling ill. However, there are many ways to combat seasickness.  Dave Mills, Chief Commercial Officer at Iglu Cruise  explains everything there is to know, and also how to prevent it. What exactly is seasickness? Seasickness is a type of motion sickness which can make you feel dizzy and sick due to the movements of a boat or ship. It is caused by repeated movements when travelling.  It occurs when your brain can’t make sense of information sent from your eyes, ears and body. The inner ear sends different signals to your brain from those your eyes are seeing. These confusing messages cause you to feel unwell. What are the symptoms of seasickness? Dizziness Sleepiness Headaches Nausea and vomiting Excessive sweating or cold sweats Loss of appetite  How can you alleviate seasickness on a cruise ship?  Iglu Cruise’s Dave Mills has some suggestions: 1. Get some seasickness tablets or patches from a pharmacy  Whilst chewable, non-drowsy tablets are often a popular option (especially for kids), there is a variety of over-the-counter options available for preventing and treating sickness. Travel sickness patches are another available option, which can be prescribed by a GP. These can be applied behind the ear and slowly release medication into your body to correct some of the chemical imbalances caused by motion sickness. You’ll also find versions which offer relief for up to 24 hours and are very affordable. For further advice on which is the best option for you, speak to your GP or pharmacist. 2. Choose a shorter cruise If you’re worried about feeling seasick, why not try a shorter cruise? Shorter cruises can range from anywhere from one night up to five. A weekend getaway could be the perfect option for you. You could also try booking a shorter cruise as a tester, to see how you feel before you book a longer-stay trip.  3. Sail on a bigger ship  One of the benefits of sailing on a bigger ship is that you won’t feel the motions as easily. With so many top cruise lines producing bigger ships each year, it’s easy to opt for larger cruise ships which use state-of-the-art technology and stabilisers.  These stabilisers are submersed beneath the ship to prevent the side-to-side rocking that you may experience out at sea, ensuring guests enjoy a smooth, comfortable journey. 4. Pick a cabin in the middle of the ship Similar to the middle of a seesaw, cabins located in the middle of a cruise ship won’t feel the motions as intensely as those located at the bow or stern.  Choosing a lower deck is also better for those who experience seasickness, as the movements don’t feel as intense.  Speaking to a travel agent before you book is a great way to ensure you can find the right cabin for you. Just mention you would like to feel as little motion on the ship as possible, and trained professionals will be able to offer guidance in picking the best cabin.  5. Choose itineraries with fewer sea days With so many itineraries to choose from around the world, there’s bound to be a cruise holiday to suit you. If you’re prone to seasickness, opt for an itinerary with fewer days out to sea, and more time spent in port.  While a Transatlantic cruise is certainly an unforgettable experience, you may find the extended time at sea is too much for your seasickness. Instead, go for something like a Mediterranean island hopping cruise where you’ll be in port almost every single day or in calmer waters. Article Credit to:   https://www.iglucruise.com/
