  • Five Romantic Honeymoon Destinations for 2024

After many months of planning, the big day has arrived, you’ve said I do, and you’ve partied like you’re 21 and are now ready to sit back, relax and enjoy a fortnight in the sun or explore a new city. Most couples are looking for somewhere to recharge, celebrate and enjoy each other’s company in a very special destination. Where will you go for the most romantic honeymoon? The choice is endless. Here are a few of my favourite destinations suited to honeymooners. The Amalfi Coast, Italy (The Land of Lovers) The Amalfi Coast is a stunning stretch of coastline in southern Italy, known for its picturesque landscape, multicoloured cliffside villages like Amalfi and Positano and the turquoise Tyrrhenian Sea. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site and a very popular destination for its beauty and cultural richness. Amalfi is also one of the most romantic destinations in Europe, honeymooners will remember this amazing destination with fond memories for evermore! Maldives, Indian Ocean The Maldives is a tranquil group of islands in the Indian Ocean, a tropical paradise and an idyllic honeymoon destination that offers an unparalleled romantic experience. There are lots of islands to choose from, but my choice would have to be Kuramathi, it’s 1.8kms long and is one of the largest tourist islands in Maldives and comprises of 360 villas in 11 categories to suit most budgets. It’s an all-inclusive resort featuring 12 superb restaurants and 7 bars all of which are located in beautiful settings around the island. You can walk the whole island in approximately 30/40 minutes and that includes the magnificent sandbank, that once visited, will never be forgotten! It was the highlight of my stay there. Greece (Cyclades Island) Santorini is often considered one of the most romantic islands in Greece, renowned for its stunning sunsets, and white-washed buildings with blue domes perched on cliffs overlooking the deep blue sea. The island offers breathtaking views. Its narrow winding streets, filled with cafés and restaurants serving delicious Greek cuisine are the place to be as you wait to witness some of the most magical sunsets you’ve ever seen. The joyous feeling that comes with being in the presence of someone special will be multiplied in this magical place! Paris (The City of Lights). While it’s not a beach destination, Paris is still one of the most romantic cities in the world. If you appreciate a good romantic walk hand in hand, you’ll love Paris, which offers culture, art and architecture, along with incredible food and wine. The iconic Eiffel Tower dominates the skyline and comes to life every evening. The tower is adorned with its golden covering and sparkles for 5 minutes every hour on the hour, while its beacon shines over Paris. Paris is famed for its romantic ambience, with charming cobblestone streets, sidewalk cafés, and the River Seine weaving through the heart of the city. Take a leisurely stroll or sit watching the world go by in this captivating city that has inspired artists, writers and dreamers alike. I guarantee you’ll return time and time again. Bali, Indonesia It’s been years since I was in Bali but I believe it’s still as magical and spiritual as ever. Bali is famous for its stunning natural beauty. It has everything, from luxurious resorts to stunning beaches, lush terraced rice fields, mystical temples, crystal clear water and vibrant coral reefs. Venture into Bali’s forests is like stepping into an entirely new world. The forests are home to lots of secret waterfalls where couples flock for romantic picnics and secluded swims. Bali is also renowned for its spa resorts, offering luxurious wellness experiences. If you fancy some traditional Balinese treatments with modern spa amenities you’ve come to the right place. Bali has it all. Adding to the amazing romantic experiences available across the island, indulging in a couples spa is perhaps the most sensual, inviting you and your loved one to reconnect, relax and luxuriate together. This tropical paradise offers more than just stunning sunsets and lush landscapes, it’s a perfect blend of love, adventure and relaxation. https://www.sunway.ie/

  • Weekend in Milan

Apart from being Italy’s second most populous city, Milan is the world capital of fashion and design. From iconic landmarks to hidden gems, choosing a Milan weekend getaway allowed me to indulge in a whirlwind adventure through fashion, culture, and culinary delights.  Milan hosts major fashion events like Milan Fashion Week , where designers from all over the globe showcase the latest collections. The event attracts fashion enthusiasts and celebrities providing a platform for designers to present their creations and set trends for the upcoming seasons. Fashion is widely displayed on the streets of Milan as locals and visitors alike dress with a keen sense of style and a flair for the latest fashion trends. One of my favourite pastimes is to sit back with a coffee or a glass of wine and watch the style and expressions of the passersby. Milan is the place to do it… Weekend In Milan: The Cathedral is a Must-Visit Milan is also home to the world-renowned Cathedral Duomo Di Milano, a magnificent Gothic Cathedral in the heart of the city. It is one of the largest Cathedrals in the world and on my recent visit there, I was fortunate to see for myself its incredible beauty and dominance. It’s truly spectacular. Construction began as early as 1386 and spanned over several centuries. To this day, its upkeep is ongoing. The cathedral’s intricate facade is adorned with countless spires, statues, and elaborate decorations which need to be meticulously cleaned to maintain its grandeur. The interior is filled with artwork and religious relics dating back to the 13th century. There is also a plate on the wall celebrating the laying of the first stone in 1386. Once inside, the feeling of peace and serenity is overwhelming and for those who wish to attend church, there is a weekly mass service schedule available both in the cathedral and online. The highlight of the cathedral for me was the rooftop terraces, which are accessible by stairs (265 steps) or by a lift inside the cathedral. The rooftop terraces offer unique panoramic views over the modern rising city that is Milan. It was fascinating to see the new Milan in the distance, we could also see the famous (Bosco Verticale) Milan Vertical Forest, a pair of residential skyscrapers covered with over 20,000 trees, 5,000 shrubs and thousands of floral plants, creating a green vertical forest. The towers were designed to promote sustainability, reduce pollution and enhance urban biodiversity, making them an example of green architecture. They are very striking to look at, and I’d say even more so in summer. Another fabulous landmark that blew me away, was the very impressive Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. It is Italy’s oldest active shopping gallery and is a major landmark of Milan. It’s an elegant 19th-century shopping arcade filled with luxury boutiques like Prada, Gucci, Dior, and Chanel, to name just a few of the prestigious brands in this iconic shopping gallery. Not only is it home to luxury boutiques, but it also has a selection of restaurants and cafés. We stopped for coffee and pastries in Pasticceria Marchesii 1824 (one of the oldest and most renowned pastry shops in Milan) neatly tucked away in the Galleria next door to the Prada men’s store. It’s an upstairs restaurant with incredible views over the main dome of Milan’s living room. The cappuccino was one of the nicest I’ve ever had as were the pastries. We didn’t pre-book and were lucky to get a table, but my advice to you, if you particularly wanted to visit on your Milan weekend getaway, would be to make a reservation. There were a lot of people queueing on the stairs as we were leaving. It’s well worth a visit. This magnificent shopping arcade is one of the most impressive sights in Milan. On the ground of the central octagonal, four mosaics are portraying the coat of arms of the three capitals of the Kingdom of Italy (Turin, Florence and Rome) plus Milan’s . Tradition says that if a person spins around three times with a heel on the testicles of the bull from Turin’s coat of arms this will bring good luck. Personally, I didn’t get to try it. There’s always next time and another reason I need to come back for a Milan weekend getaway.

  • Weekend In Washington, D.C. During Cherry Blossom Season

A friend of mine described Washington, D.C. as cool, clean and classy and she wasn’t mistaken. I was blown away at how different it is to other cities I’ve visited in the USA (New York, Boston, Chicago and the likes) It’s all of the above and some, from the amazing architecture to the green green grass and the low rise buildings to the man made Tidal Basin. It’s a compact city on the Potomac river bordered by the states of Maryland and Virginia. Washington, D.C. the capital of the United States, is rich in history and culture, and is a unique and historical place among American cities, because it was completely planned for the national capital and needed to be distinct from the states. President George Washington chose the specific site along the Potomac and Anacostia rivers. We arrived to a mild and sunny afternoon and were delighted to be told that we had come just in time for Cherry Blossom season. Cherry Blossom season is huge in D.C. it’s one of Washington’s most popular tourist attractions, drawing approx 1.5 million visitors for three weeks of street parties, concerts, family activities and days to go fly a kite. Not forgetting the chance to see the stunning display of delicate pink and white flowers which adorn the branches of the beautiful Cherry Blossom trees. The tree in full bloom is a reminder that winter has gone and spring is here, marking a time of new beginnings and fresh starts. We started our tour of Washington, D.C. at the White House as it was only a two-minute walk from our hotel The St, Regis Washington, D.C. a fab hotel located in Downtown D.C. that is within walking distance to all the museums, memorials and galleries. We were delighted with our choice. There is an evening ritual at St Regis hotels around the world, where at 6pm every evening champagne is opened using a sabre and offered to guests staying in the hotel, the sabring celebrates the transition from day to night. It’s said that Napoleon Bonaparte famously opened champagne with his sabre in both victory and defeat and the art of sabrage is now the signature ceremony of the St. Regis Evening Rituals series. Personally, I was delighted to experience this ritual and enjoy the delicious champagne. “Champagne: in victory, one deserves it; in defeat, one needs it.” – NAPOLEON The White House is exactly as you see in the movies, a white mansion, surrounded by expansive green lawns, gardens and security fencing. We arrived early in the morning so were very lucky to get right up close to the railings and take some photos as there were very few people visiting at that time. Seemingly, most days at this time of the year the crowds can be ten deep, I guess we just got lucky. The streets are lined with Secret Service agents either walking or on bikes, ensuring a sense of security, therefore one feels very safe. Overall, the White House exudes a sense of importance and power, befitting its role as the home of the President of The United States. There are so many sights to see in Washington, D.C. it’s hard to decide where to go or what to do. As we didn’t have any real plans, we decided to see how our days panned out. After the White House, we walked the length and breadth of the National Mall – It’s an historic park stretching over two miles from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial and is flanked by numerous museums and monuments, including the Washington Monument and the World War II memorial. It’s a great place to explore American history and culture and you get to spend as much time as you want, depending on your particular interests. Following that, we went to explore the Tidal Basin – The Tidal Basin is a scenic reservoir beside the National Mall. It is famous for its scenic views of cherry blossoms which line its shores and creates a stunning backdrop for the monuments and memorials nearby. There are approximately 3,500 cherry blossom trees surrounding the Tidal Basin so you can imagine the beautiful sight before us. The trees were a gift from Japan to the United States in 1912 as a symbol of friendship between the two nations. I was obsessed with the colours and clusters of flowers and how the branches drooped to create stunning views of the Jefferson Memorial across the basin. The basin is surrounded by walking paths making it easy to visit the memorials and monuments but were quite busy when we were there. I’d recommend visiting early in the morning to avoid the crowds, especially during Cherry Blossom season. The following day we booked a tour of The Capitol Building – Arguably the most magnificent building in Washington. The tour was free, lasted about 1.5 hours, and was very interesting to hear about the history of American politics and learn about American democracy. I’d definitely recommend a visit to the Capitol Building which can be booked online or entry is included in most tours . Another great way to see the sights is by Segway, we booked a 2.5 hour tour of Washington with Capitol Segway and it was amazing! We visited Another great way to see the sights is by Segway, we booked a 2.5 hour tour of Washington with Capitol Segway with stops to take photos and the opportunity to visit the Lincoln Memorial and The Reflecting Pool which are both stunning. The highlight for me was, we got to ride the Segway down Pennsylvania Avenue which is the route for presidential inaugural parades and home to significant and iconic landmarks, including the Old Post Office Pavilion, Trump International Hotel and Washington, D.C. city hall to name but a few. Pennsylvania Avenue runs for approximately six miles connecting the White House to the Capitol Building. The buildings are stunning and every street corner tells a story. I had never ridden a Segway before and couldn’t recommend it highly enough if you wanted a different experience of sight seeing. Make sure Washington, D.C. is on your travel list this year and follow Travel Times for more travel inspiration.

  • Hong Kong: Beyond the City Lights for Earth Day

Beyond the city lights and soaring skyscrapers, approximately 75% of Hong Kong is natural beauty and greenery, with mountain peaks, country parks and more than 260 islands making up its landscape. Ahead of Earth Day on April 22, here are five of Hong Kong’s most surprising outdoor adventures .  Lantau Island Lantau Island is the biggest of Hong Kong’s islands, situated away from the urban bustle of the city centre. Here, visitors can find some of the most stunning beaches and hiking trails such as Sunset Peak (pictured above), the third-highest peak in the region which provides incredible views of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding islands. In addition to hiking, visitors to Lantau Island can enjoy some of the lesser-known shorelines including Cheung Sha Beach and Pui O Beach, where they can try their hand at water sports or simply enjoy the long stretch of golden sand.  Dragon’s Back Located on the southeastern corner of Hong Kong Island is the Dragon’s Back mountain ridge trail. Suitable for families, amateur hikers and all adventure-seeking tourists, with a total distance of 8km, travellers can experience the striking landscapes on a four-hour hike. The trail consists of a collection of up and down mounds that resemble the back of a sleeping dragon which explains the name. Additionally, each checkpoint is marked with a dragon symbol further assimilating hikers into the experience.   Tai Lam Country Park One of nature’s most spectacular formations is Tai Lam Country Park, home to Tai Lam Chung Reservoir, also known as Thousand Island Lake (pictured above). The islands, which were once hills before the Tai Lam Chung Valley was flooded, make this one of the most popular reservoirs in the city. Visitors can hike to the Reservoir Islands Viewpoint for undoubtedly the best views of the mini-islands below.  Tai Mo Shan Tai Mo Shan, an extinct volcano, is Hong Kong’s highest peak surpassing all other peaks in the city for both its altitude, magnitude and, undoubtedly, its view. Whether visitors want to catch the morning sunrise or be besieged by clouds at dusk, Tai Mo Shan is the perfect spot. With an elevation of 957 metres, the peak provides striking views of the city. Hikers heading to the top will pass wild jungle and several magnificent waterfalls on the journey.  Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark A stunning geological feature in Hong Kong is the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, a 150 square kilometre area with hexagonal rock columns formed by volcanic eruptions approximately 140 million years ago. The landscape includes volcanic rocks and spectacular sedimentary rock formations, offering an outdoor playground for walkers and even budding photographers. High Island is a highlight, where travellers can explore the hiking trails and take in the scenic surroundings from the many viewpoints.

  • The Best and Worst Host Cities to Visit for Euro 2024 (In Terms of Value for Money!)

The European Championships – or Euros – return this summer, with Germany hosting Euro 2024, across 10 cities, between June 14 and July 14. The tournament has, over the past couple of decades, become one of the most watched sporting events in the world with more than 5 billion viewers, even allowing for its geographic limitations. This year’s edition marks a welcome return (from Euro 2020 and the Qatar World Cup) to a single host nation summer event, and a traditional footballing host nation, at that. But, while Ireland has missed out on this summer’s party, many Irish soccer fans will still make the trip to catch a bit of the action. Given Irish fans don’t have to be too partisan this summer, they can pick and choose which matches and cities to visit. But, which are the best options? A new survey, by casino bonus guide NoDepositDaily.com, has ranked the 10 host Euro 2024 cities in terms of cost of beer inside stadiums, the number of hotels within 2 miles of each city centre and the average price of a hotel per night. The Best and Worst Options (in terms of value) Are: Frankfurt – Deutsche Bank Park Berlin – Olympiastadion Gelsenkirchen – Arena MufSchalke Cologne – RheinEnergieStadion Dortmund – Signal Iduna Park Stuttgart – MHPArena Hamburg – Volksparkstadion Dusseldorf – Merkur Spiel Arena Munich – Allianz Arena Leipzig – Red Bull Arena Mervyn Davids, from NoDepositDaily.com, said: “2024 is going to be a huge year for Europe, and hopefully, we’ll see some great football. If you are heading to Germany to see all the action for yourself, see the sites, or even learn the culture, costs throughout your trip could vary depending on what you purchase or partake in. Whether you prefer cheap and cheerful, or convenience, these findings give a fantastic insight for anyone planning their 2024 trip to Germany.” Many Irish neutrals may opt to damn the expense and go for the sheer atmosphere, instead – Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena – albeit 9th in the list – Borussia Dortmund’s famed Westfalenstadion (now called Signal Iduna Park) and Schalke 05’s Gelsenkirchen ground (the site, in its original form, of Ireland’s famous 1-0 victory over England at Euro ’88) all obvious choices if the head doesn’t rule the heart on this one!

Cuyahoga Valley National Park, the 9th most visited U.S. National Park in 2022, will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2024. With over 2.9 million annual visitors, the park is a haven of wilderness, featuring the majestic Cuyahoga River, meandering through forests, valley landscapes, and historic farms. The anniversary celebrations promise to delve into the captivating stories of the valley’s past, inviting visitors to explore through hiking, biking, birding, or a scenic ride on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. Scheduled for completion in late 2024, the $150-million redevelopment of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History is set to transform the museum experience. The project includes the addition of new public spaces, an expanded campus, and innovative exhibits that place visitors at the heart of scientific discovery, pioneering a new model for natural history museums. Meanwhile, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame , situated on the shores of Lake Erie, will host the annual induction ceremony in Autumn 2024. This iconic event will bring music’s biggest stars to Cleveland, following the 2023 induction of legends such as George Michael, Kate Bush and Chaka Khan. Adding to the city’s allure, a new downtown boutique hotel, the Fidelity Hotel , with 97 rooms and a speakeasy-style bar, is set to open its doors in 2024. Come July, Cleveland will be at the centre stage of sports as it hosts the 2024 Pan-American Masters Games (PAMG). Welcoming over 7,500 athletes from more than 50 countries, PAMG is an Olympic-like sports festival for athletes over 30 years old, featuring nearly 20 medal-contending sports, including track and field, tennis, basketball, pickleball, and cycling. Cleveland’s diverse offerings make it an ideal destination for both the sports enthusiast and the cultural explorer.
