Hola Chicas!’ is one of my favourite greetings of all time. It comes from how my friends and I greet each other, and from the many weekend trips to Spain we’ve taken over the years.

I have been on many girlie weekends to many different countries and Spain still ranks high on my list of top destinations for fun in the sun with the girls. Whether it’s sunbathing, shopping, or just sitting around eating, drinking and chatting, the Costa del Sol has it all. All combined with great nightlife and amazing beaches, you’re guaranteed a fantastic weekend away, far from the busyness of everyday life.

A girls weekend can be just what the doctor ordered. Girlfriends understand if you’re going through tough times and need some emotional support. They empathize with what you’re feeling, because chances are – they’ve been there too. And there is nothing more powerful than connecting with friends who are on the same page as you. Well. Maybe one thing…recharging with your girlfriends at the Costa del Sol. So, pack your bags, gather your gal pals and head off for a weekend of fun in the sun!

Costa del Sol (literally “Coast of the Sun”) where the sun shines for most of the year, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.

The Costa del Sol has many vibrant coastal towns to choose from for your weekend away. Each one is characterized by their own individual beauty. These towns, such as Marbella, Torremolinos and Fuengirola boast stunning Mediterranean beaches, lively promenades and magnificent marinas. The choice is endless.
The Costa del Sol has a great variety of bars and nightclubs spread out across the coast. Especially in the summer months, Marbella is always in a party state of mind and is well known for its vibrant lifestyle with numerous places to party. Benalmadena Marina was always one of our favourites if we wanted to dance the night away. There are plenty of nightclubs and bars to choose from, most of them offering ‘two for the price of one’ drinks and free shots if you’re interested. They get going around midnight, and last until the early hours of the morning.

Almost all of these clubs are set next to the coast offering amazing views over the Mediterranean Sea, and because of the huge amount of golf clubs here, Costa del Sol is often referred to as “Costa del Golf”. With more than 70 golf courses to choose from, it’s a haven for golf lovers from around the world.

As for the beaches, I could go on and on about the beautiful beaches of Costa del Sol. There are endless beaches to stroll along, all are spotless and well maintained with comfortable sunbeds and beach umbrellas available to rent.

Each beach has its own unique charm and atmosphere. Some are vibrant and bustling, lined with beach bars and water sports facilities. Others are more secluded and tranquil. One of my favourites is Los Boliches in Fuengirola, it’s a long stretch of sandy beach offering traditional Andalusian vibes, lined with palm trees and boasting wide pathways where locals sit on benches to people watch. This beach has been awarded the Blue Flag, a distinction awarded by the European Foundation for Environmental Education.

In 2023 alone, Costa Del Sol had a record number of 39 Blue Flag beaches. This is the gold standard for public facilities and cleanliness, so whichever resort you visit you can be sure you’ll find a magnificent beach close by.

Another thing I love about the beaches are the vendors, who walk the beach selling fake handbags, sunglasses, jewelry and sarongs. There’s always great banter and lots of bargains to be had.

There are plenty of chiringuitos (Beach bars) to choose from, all serving drinks and tapas. My favourite is called Madrid Playa. This chiringuito offers two sunbeds, an umbrella and a bottle of prosecco for €20 for the whole day, sure how could you resist?
They also offer beach side service, so you don’t even have to leave your sunbed for lunch. It’s a no-brainer for me and the girls!

I’ve spent many a girlie weekend on this beach soaking up the sun, laughing and chatting with the girls, solving the problems of the world, reminiscing and making new plans and creating lots of memories. It really is the best therapy. Prioritizing a girls weekend can do more for your mental health than you might think. It clears your mind, de-stresses and enables you to come back completely refreshed, all of which makes you a better you!

Aer Lingus and Ryanair operate daily flights from Dublin to Malaga. Flight time is about 2 hours 40 minutes and Torremolinos is only 8 km from the airport, so you’ll have time to hit the beaches, nightclubs and go all in at the Costa del Sol.
